Getting-involved

One of the best things about University is having the time and the opportunities to broaden your horizons. Whether you get involved in a club, sport or society, or turn your attention towards more media-based antics like TV or radio, the experience will always look great on your CV.

Being pro-active and getting involved is also a great way of meeting more people and broadening your circle of friends too. Here are just a few ways we help our students keep themselves busy.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

The Student Activities team is here to support all our existing clubs and societies as well as offering support to anyone who wants to get involved or set up their own club or society.

Joining a club or society is one of the best ways of getting more from your time at University. You'll meet new people, make new friends, learn new skills and most important of all, have fun! There's so much on offer that it's hard to know where to start. So the best thing for us to do is direct you to our Student Union at www.staffsunion.com then if anything catches your eye, simply click on it and it'll give you all the info you need.

And remember, if there's nothing there that you like, we can help you to trial a new activity that appeals to you and other like-minded students.

GK MEDIA

If media's your thing - then GK Media's for you!  Think of it as a collection of various student media groups supported by the Students' Union; there's GK News (newspaper), GK Radio, and GK TV. All are run exclusively by students to help them gain experience as well as ensure that all the other students get to hear about issues that actually matter to them.

You don't need to be on a media related course or anything like that to get involved, all the students are after is people with a bit of razzle-dazzle and a bit of enthusiasm. If you want to write an article, host a radio show or edit TV footage, then why not e-mail the Media Officer, Richard Bishop? He looks after GK Media and would be more than happy to hear from potential Staffordshire University students of the future. In fact he's probably doing a piece on this website. At least we hope he is!

VOLUNTEERING

Hands up those who've got a few hours spare? You do? Jolly good. Volunteering to do something different is the perfect way to meet new people, experience new things and develop new skills.

Our schemes, like Sponte and Lifetools, help you brush-up on event and time management, team leadership, teaching, marketing, managing stress, all sorts! And it's these skills that will help you while you're here, and the ones you'll take with you when you leave. It's win/win!

The good news? There are plenty of activities available to choose from. Skydiving, charity beach cleans, organic gardening, the lot! The other good news? Whatever you decide to volunteer for, most of it's free and you'll get all the training and support you need to make the most of your experience.
